There are literally thousands of disabled people in the UK who could benefit from the help an assistance dog provides and sadly there are simply not enough trained dogs to go round. We are concentrating on helping young people and children living on the Isle of Wight up to the age of 30 years.
We are providing a service specially tailored to these young people's needs. Each dog is carefully matched and trained to meet a specific need. Having fully trained each Ability Dog, we provide a high level of training and support for the young person in their home location and at their place of education or work. We, for example, go with them with their Ability Dog to their college or university and introduce the dog to their tutors, work out where it is going to settle during the lectures, etc.
We continue to support them throughout the working life of their Ability Dog. As they change or increase the things they are doing we train them and their Ability Dog for each new situation.
We are very open minded about who we help - whatever a young person's disability if an Ability Dog can help them we will endeavour to train one for them. If you would like to know more, please use the contact us page.
Once an Ability Dog is placed with a young person, with our support, the dog will help them until its retirement at 10-12 years of age. However old the young person is at that time, if they still need an Ability Dog we will be happy to train a successor Ability Dog for them.
